There's The Egg, And There's The Egg...

Ok...I admit it...I'm a big sucker when it comes to eggs...

Cook it any way you want, and chances are, I will make a beeline for it...At the buffet-line, at the mamak-stall, at the chap-fan stall...Whether it is poached, scrambled, boiled, sunny-side-up, bulls-eye, with onions, with cheese, half-boiled, soaking in herbal-concoction, salted...You get the picture...

But...Yes, there is a but...

They say eggs are bad for you because they make your cholesterol levels go up!

But again, is it true? I've been coming across new studies where they say that eggs don't actually raise your cholesterol levels...

Pn Yasmin, a friend of mine, was telling me the other day about this doctor in Australia who, for six weeks, took 6 eggs a day, while his friend took 12 a day (again, for six weeks)...Before their study, they took their cholesterol levels, and retook it after the end of the study...

And guess what? At the end of the six weeks, the level of cholesterol in their body was so low, it couldn't be tested!

Wow...I'm a little skeptical about it being too low to be tested, but could it be possible that eggs are not that big a culprit when it comes to cholesterol?

*Somebody, please say yes!*

And he we have another study: In 1991 (Ok, who came up with the theory that eggs give you high cholesterol, huh?), a strange New England Journal of Medicine case study of an 88-year-old man who ate 25 eggs a day showed that he had normal cholesterol and no clinically significant heart disease!

You can read the whole thing here...

And another story about how eggs don't affect your cholesterol here...

Again...Who came up with the supposedly newfound theory that eggs give you high cholesterol? Huh? Must be those people making Omega-3 eggs! *Hyiuk Hyiuk* Own up!

What do you guys think eh?

Oh, I have another confession to make...

I ate one-and-a-half eggs today, and had an egg sandwich...

I know, I know...No big deal...Lame...But I get all guilty if I eat too many eggs...

Anybody know what to make of this whole eggs thingy?

And if anybody makes a whole 'Chicken and Egg, Which came first?' joke, I'm going to throw a rotten egg at you...

But then again, no eggs in my fridge last long enough to become rotten...;)

i wont say anything bad abt eggs since like u, im also a die-hard fan of egg. hard-boiled, sunny-side up, in my fried noodle/rice, in my cekodok etc. u name it, i most likely put eggs in them. so its good to kno tht it doesn effect the cholesterol. heheh.

Phew!

Now I don't feel so guilty. I'm close to hitting the mid-century, Daphne, so I really should be paying attention to my diet - but eggs are my favorite!

For breakfast, I usually start the day with two fried eggs (Mata Sapi sunny side up - just love the dripping yolk!) to be eaten with lightly toasted bread.

Then sometimes, for lunch (if the guilt hasn't gotten to me yet) maybe telor dadar with rice... so there's always telor in my diet.

Anyway, everyone's saying that the yellow yolk is the nasty stuff, but thank God my recent medical showed my cholestrol levels to be ok so there must be some truth to that research...hmmm?

Err, better not push my luck, huh?

BTW, hope Adrian and Pakcik gets better...

I dont think eggs are the only food the contribute to people getting high cholesterol. Cholestrol is only found in animal products (that is why you dont find cholestrol in plants).

I think you can be eating a whole tonnes of eggs yet you eat 10x more tonnes of vegs (and no other meat) and can still hv normal cholestrol level. How one gets high cholestrol is a accumulation of cholesterol from different food. Egg is just one of the food that has a higher cholesterol content (compared to other food)

I believe just eat all food in moderation :)

WP said...

Hmm...I thought moderation was the key word? Anyway, if every scientific study was to be believed, nothing in the world would be safe for consumption. Nothing at all. So just eat all the eggs you want (note: this is not medical advice! Follow it at your own risk! lol)

Ah, a sucker for eggs, eh? Have you tried those big Ostrich eggs? :)

eggs are my salvation as i'm practically a vegetarian, and milk as well.i guess i goof down on an average 2 a day.BUT i'm lucky as i'm genetically capable of processing the excess cholesterol.

epidemilogically speaking egg yoke does increase bad cholesterol level but there are instances as u mention lucky souls on earth who are able to process their cholesterol in a better fashion......all in the genes u see.

love the half boiled type especially with lotta pepper and soya sauce.....DELICIOUS

Daphne:

Now I know I'm not alone in blog that loves eggs. My fav are:
1-Telur dadar with lots of onion and red chilli thrown in.

2- Telur mereng( 3/4 cooked...I called it mereng because tiga suku person is a mereng person)

3-Century egg( the Johorean version)

4-Omelette with everything in it.

5-Now at home its telur dadar with onions, red chilli and slices of sausages...yummy-yummy.

Whenever we have eggs at home, my wife will tease me: " Mesti telur tu abang makan last punya..."
Yes after I finished my rice, there will be a small piece of egg on my plate. I'll just put it in my mouth and let the taste travel from the tip og my tongue to my inner lips and the soft palate.

Im an Eggman. Superman,Spiderman and Batman, step aside please!

Dear Daphne..

Yes! I am basically an `egg' person, too!! :) :)

Whenever I am in a situation where I couldn't decide what to eat .. `Fu Yong' egg will automically comes to mind & it's actually everyone's favourite!!

It would be great if it's true that eggs are not the main contributor of cholestrol .. I still felt super guilty whenever I had half-boiled eggs for breakfsat!!

Daph...me too..me too...in fact the whole family lovessss eggsss...we even try out various versions of cooking, frying eggs...

Hey Princess,

Daphne Ling said...

Hi Mat Salo,

Welcome back...Oh, you lucky guy...Normal cholesterol levels at "hitting the mid-century"? What a lucky man! You know, I can eat plain rice with just a fried egg (not too cooked!) with plain soya sauce...Sigh...Bliss...

Daphne Ling said...

Hi Winnie,

Ar how right you are...Moderation is the key word, although I am having a tough time convincing my stomach ;)
Actually, I am not that much of a meat person...Most of my protein comes from fish and eggs...I am quite a vege person, although many people seem to find it hard to believe =) Thanks for the advice(s) though!

Daphne Ling said...

Hi WP,

Hmmm...You've got a point there...So yes, medical advice or not, I'm going to eat my eggs...But moderation it is too =) Thanks!

Daphne Ling said...

Hi Kak Pi,

Daphne Ling said...

Hey Aemi,

Now, now...Don't you start making me eat even more eggs! Ish...More eggs to select from means me eating more! How are you anyway? Take care dear...

Daphne Ling said...

I run a weight management program using eggs on the first 2 days. By 3rd day u get to lose 2 lbs. Your body will still manufacture cholesterol from sugars even if u don't consume them. Even pure vegetarians do not have zero cholesterol though they don't consume cholesterol foods (animal products), some even have high cholesterol. Beef has high choleterol yet cows eat grass, a vegetarian. Eggs causing high blood cholesterol is a myth.

Daphne Ling said...

Hi Dr Shu,

I officially love you! Not only did you give me such great news that eggs don't raise your cholesterol levels, you also said the magic words...Lose 2 lbs...For someone who only knows what it means to lose hair and lose brain cells, this is welcome news indeed! Ah...What a perfect end to a ok-ok day...
