"For a Mum, Sometimes She's Pretty Cool!"...

I love reading the comics, and a few comic strips are very dear to me...I particularly like Calvin and Hobbes, The Archies, Zits, Baby Blues and even Garfield!

I thought I'd share one today:-

It's from the one comic strip about one little boy who annoys us to no end, and yet, is very endearing...

We all know him as Calvin and Hobbes...

My mum calls him 'that little rascal' ;)...

Self-Explanatory! Click image to enlarge and read...=)

Mums are cool, no?

Come to think of it, maybe I'd share more comics from time to time...Some are real cool, and touching too!

dont we all love calvin? all credits to bill watterson for creating such lovable characters in calvin and his stuffed-tiger buddy, hobbes. i cant even get enough of little miss derkins. she's just too cute to be left out of some of the strips. hahha...

D, did you notice about calvin's parents being nameless? even his own family name has never made known.

my kiasuism is kicking in...first time to be the first to comment here...yay! hihi...

Daph ... Calvin & Hobbes is the only cartoon I enjoy endlessly! It is a class by itself in cartoon strips. It's sad that Bill Watterson stopped creating it. I may already have all the books, have been collecting over the years. :)

DARN! This kerp beat me by 2 seconds!

Hey Kerp,

Yes! I did realise!

Calvin's parents are always 'Mum', 'Dad', or 'Dear'...No name, and no family name...

The only person who has a complete name is Susie Derkins! Hehe...

There were other Calvin & Hobbes comics I wanted to kick start with, but Surprise! Surprise!, my wireless won't load it...

Oh, and re kiasuism, kita semua sama lar...In the last post, Jimi made it here first...

I always cannot be kiasu (even though mahu)...My wireless tak bagi!!! ;)

Hi Aunty Rita,

Haha...I baru went to visit Kak Pi's blog, and came back (to access my blogroll) and suddenly I see 4 comments? Haha...All about our kiasuism...=)

What striked me was Calvin & Hobbes ran for 10 years, and Calvin remained 6 years old...And his last comic strip was so simple...Nothing elaborate, but it said a lot...

Great man, that Bill Watterson...

Daphne, you beat me to it! I was thinking about posting a Calvin and Hobbes strip on my blog! I borrowed this big book of Calvin and Hobbes from the library and it is due in a couple of days. I should renew it though, so I can keep it for another 3 weeks!

I just love Calvin and Hobbes! :-)

Daphne Ling said...

Hi Kak Puteri,

Wow...I didn't know I had so many Calvin & Hobbes fans as friends!

That Calvin sure is a rascal in many ways (especially when he gives his dad those poll results!), but he is just a kid that is in all of us =) Sometimes I wish I could give that little imaginery kiddo a real tight hug!

Sometimes..well..the not so dangerous ones lah..we should let our kids learn the hard way! Then they will always remember the lessons..Not all though, especially anything to do with motorbikes. That one, just say no!

Yeah! That's a cool mom.

Hehe, that reminds me of when my father let my brother and me try beer when we were little... (we asked, of course) I hated it and have never touched it since :P

Daphne Ling said...

Hi Stevie,

I am not familiar with Mafalda...Just googled it, and she looks kinda familiar (like I have seen this comic somewhere)...

Mafalda kinda looks like a cross of Lucy, Patty and Sally Brown from Charles Schulz's Peanuts comic!

Hehe...Will look her up though! Thanks for sharing...=)

Alamak! I can't beat Kerp to first place, never mind, cannot even tell the time and do simple maths!! Malu-nya ...

Daph ... you are so right. I suspect Kerp was a young Calvin at one time. Haha!

Rita Ho said...

Daph ... if only our life can be like that, hor? Go on for years but we remain the same. :)

PS to Ruby ... Haha! Love your reference to those MRs. Go get them, dear!

That strip(teaser) you put in this entry reminded me when I was 10 or 11.

Bapak's relative came to visit us and when they left the hubby forgot his ciggarete pack. The next day when mak wasn't around, me and my younger brother took out a stick and started smoking( and warning the others not to tell mak). When mak came back my sister told her.
Mak cooly ask another bro to go to a sundry shop near our house and buy a cigar Cap Ikan Emas( made in Sg Petani).
Then she took a match and asked me and my brother to light the cigar and smoke right in front of her. We pleade to mak but she said: Kecik-kecik dah nak isap rokok! Hisap cerut ni sampai habih! La ni juga.
We and no choice. After inhaling 2-3 times, everything started to go roundand round. The house started to move. The ceiling suddenly rotate like a fan. Me and my bro puked at that instant.
Mak then said: Awat tak bagi habih?
Hisap la lagi.
She later ask us to lie down and apply minyak cap kapak to our temple and foreheads. We slept.
When we woke up much later, she had bubur kacang prepared for us.
I'm no Calvin and my bro is no Hobble.

hah3..padan muka saya.

Hi Kak Ruby,

I agree that sometimes the best way to teach kids something is to give them what they want! But what if it backfires? What if let say, Calvin likes it?!? But ditto on the bikes!

Daphne Ling said...

Hi WP,

Ah...Cool dad now! Oh well, at least you learnt something, and you know how it tastes like ;) Kekeke...But beer looks strong, probably that's why your dad said ok knowing it is so strong!

Daphne Ling said...

Hi Aunty Rita,

Haha...I guess we were all Calvins at one point...Just that he says things we would never have dreamt of saying! We probably thought it, but didn't dare to say it out loud ;)

As for staying six years old forever, no thank you! I got plans (I think), and being legally an adult helps ;) at times!

At the very least, it comes with a little bit of bragging rights! Hehehe...

Daphne Ling said...

Hi Nightwing,

Nope, I have never seen Zits in book form either...I always read him last (in The Star) every day! You know what they say about saving the best...His strip is hilarious...Rude at times, but his nonchalance and idiocy is just downright funny...Really poking fun (exaggerated though, at times) at humans...=)

Daphne Ling said...

Hi Doc,

Wahlau, your mother lagi cool! Samore go buy for you...

But she sayang lar...See, put minyak angin and all, and even had bubur kacang for you...=)

As for me, cigarettes is a problem for me...I can't breathe in smoke-filled air (I later found out pipe smoke doesn't have that much effect)...You wanna see a spluterring red-face fish? Come puff in my face...

So I never asked for cigarettes from my mum...

She would have skinned me anyway ;)

My hubby & I , we both love calvin & hobbes. I think we got most of the comic books on our shelves. Kalau orang pinjam tak pulang, siap call & remind. Other books don't care, calvin & hobbes, don't play-play!

And.. I've got three boys now.

Just imagine.

Daphne, as a habitual, relapsed, pro-lapsed (ada ke?) smoker I can dig this cartoon. Can't say I religiously follow C & H but my thing was Schulz's "Peanuts". It really dealt with childhood alienation and loss.

Hehee.. the Yellow Man x dapat panjat Bukit, how to naik roket meh?

VENO said...

As for me, gua tarak of the books...I get my daily dose from The Star! =)

Daphne Ling said...

Hi Abang Mat,

Actually, those DigiMen, managed to masuk the rocket! Which is why I wonder how come they can't panjat this bukit! Not that high what!

As for Peanuts, I am not as big a fan as compared to C & H, possible because I only get a full Peanuts on Sundays! Now no more =(

Daphne Ling said...

Hi Veno,

Thanks for coming over, and thank you for the lovely comment!

Yes, working with children teaches us a lot of patience...Although sometimes you feel like blowing anyway...

Hmmm...What exactly do you wanna know? You're most welcome to email me at bsb_n555kc@yahoo.co.uk with whatever questions you have...I'll try to answer them...

Oh, if you do email me, would appreciate it if you don't put a title like 'Hi' or something to that is very vague...Cos I will end up wondering if it is some SPAM or something...=)

Hope to hear from you!
