Attachment Explained: Peppermint Patty, Lucy van Pelt, Schroeder, and Charlie Brown...

Based on work by: Bartholomew, K., & Horowitz, L. M. (1991). Attachment styles among young adults: A test of a four-category model. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 61(2), 226-244. doi: 10.1037/0022-3514.61.2.226
Visualization based on lecture by Dr. Elaine Scharfe, Trent University.

I've been asked a few times what attachment is and to explain the four category model by Bartholomew and Horowitz; I guess I talk about it quite a bit and my thesis was on it...

I know a few of my friends have wondered how I remembered the four categories.

Quite simple, actually, and it was thanks to my thesis supervisor who made it very easy! She put cartoon characters when she taught it. Needless to say, I aced her exam on this question!

I've visualized it for you and put it into a JPEG file so you can have a look, but credit for the idea goes to Dr. Elaine Scharfe.

You want to know what Secure, Preoccupied, Dismissing, and Fearful people are like? Think of the four people in the above picture! And Dr. Scharfe said that you can't get more secure than Snoopy, but he's a dog, so it's harder to visualize a secure person.
