Codes, codes, codes, and codes...

Lessons from Grad School #19283:

You should always try to have an academic mentor on the side who isn't directly evaluating you.

They're the people you go to when you can't discuss things with your committee and/or when you have good news to share.

Also, establish codes early:
ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ą Drop everything, now, stat, and make me the centre of your universe because I'm really, really, really upset because I had a really, really, really big fight with The Boss.
ðŸĪŠ Happy to see you!
ðŸĪ” Not urgent, but whatcha think about ... ?
ðŸĨĩ☹️😔ðŸ˜Ĩ Don't ask about my research. Don't ask when I'm going to graduate.
ðŸĪŽ Beware. Just encountered Reviewer 3.
ðŸ˜Ą Don't approach. Grant season.
😍 I've got good news to share!
🙄 Now you see what I mean?
ðŸĪŦ Shh. Exhibit A, your 12 o'clock.
👏 Did you watch the new episode of ...?

(If for nothing, you should always have someone tight-lipped you can go to if the issue you need to discuss IS your committee...)
